In 2012, Giuliana and her husband Bill Rancic received their first kid through surrogacy. The Rancics family had three embryos left after Duke was born.
In 2014, two of the embryos were successfully placed in their surrogate, but she miscarried a few weeks later.
Then, in December 2014, Giuliana and Bill received word that their surrogate, who was carrying their third and final embryo, had miscarried once more.
Giuliana previously told PEOPLE about the loss, “It was devastating.” “With this last embryo, we were very hopeful. ‘This is surely going to work,’ we thought. This is our final opportunity.’
Giuliana, who was unable to conceive at the time due to the cancer suppressing medication she was on following her breast cancer diagnosis and subsequent double mastectomy in 2011, expressed hope that they might be able to expand their family one day.
She explained, “We’re open to everything.” “I think you’re giving each other a wonderful gift by adopting.” And, strangely enough, I’m even more open to [adoption] now than I was previously. Because I tell myself, “I love Duke so much that if I can’t take care of him, I hope there will be someone else who will.”
