From 2009 until his death on January 11, 2022, Italian journalist and politician David Maria Sassoli served as President of the European Parliament.
He was first elected to the European Parliament in 2009, and from 2013 to 2016, he served as its president. His death was due to an unexplained cause. The outcomes of the inquest are awaited by his family.
Because the cause of his death will not be known to the wider public, the eulogy is likely to be lengthy and comprehensive. Sassoli died in an Italian hospital in September after being hospitalized for pneumonia caused by legionella, according to his relatives.
He was unable to complete his work in Strasbourg, and on December 26th, he returned to his homeland.
The Italian newspaper La Repubblica wrote an eulogy for Sassoli’s death. Alessandra Vittorini, his wife, is equally crushed by his passing. The couple is the parents of two children.
In September, the Italian senator had been ailing for some weeks and was admitted to a Strasbourg hospital.
He was able to return to work remotely in October after recovering sufficiently. He returned to work in November, but was hospitalized again on December 26.
His three-year term as Speaker of the House of Representatives will come to an end next week. An immune system breakdown and pneumonia, a condition known as legionellosis, contributed to his death.
